Study: Frequent yogurt consumption lowers blood pressure
According to recent studies, women who eat five or more servings of yogurt for a longer period of time have a lower risk of developing high blood pressure. Curiously, the effect on blood pressure has not been established in men. A total of 3 larger studies were evaluated for the investigation.

Yogurt may lower your risk of high blood pressure
US researchers may have found another natural home remedy for high blood pressure. In a recent study, researchers led by Justin Buendia from the Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, found that regular consumption of yogurt may reduce the risk of high blood pressure in women. The results were recently presented at a conference of the "American Heart Association" (AHA) and published in various specialist magazines, such as on "EurekAlert!"

Effect only found in women
For their investigation, the researchers evaluated data from three large-scale studies, in which mostly women between 25 and 55 years and men between 40 and 75 years took part. It was found that women who ate five or more servings of yogurt a week were about 20 percent less likely to have high blood pressure than women who rarely consumed yogurt. This effect could not be found in men. The scientists suspect that this may have to do with the fact that men generally consume less yogurt than women.

Effect of yogurt more than other dairy products
The researchers also investigated whether the protective effect of yogurt can be enhanced by a generally healthy diet. To do this, they analyzed how close the study participants came to the conditions of the so-called DASH diet. DASH ("Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension") is specifically designed to counteract high blood pressure, for example through low salt and high-fat milk products. According to the scientists, the protective effect was greatest among the women who followed the DASH guidelines most intensively and who ate a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, low-fat milk products and whole grains. According to Buendia, it was shown that several servings of milk and cheese a week had positive effects on blood pressure, but "the effects of yogurt seemed to be stronger than those of other dairy products".

Hypertension increases risk of heart disease
"Our study shows that daily consumption of dairy products, especially yogurt, lowers the risk of developing high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for the development of heart disease and stroke," said Buendia. Since the scientists had no information about the types of yogurt the subjects consumed, the study author said: "It would be interesting to know whether popular types of yogurt, such as Greek yogurt, had other effects than normal yogurt."

Health benefits
Because this was a purely observational study, the researchers were unable to prove that yoghurt consumption is the cause of the lower risk of high blood pressure, but previous studies have also shown that foods such as low-fat yogurt, sesame and rice bran oil lower blood pressure can. And even if yogurt has been discredited in recent years, scientific studies have repeatedly shown its health benefits. Scientists from the University of Cambridge, UK, discovered a few years ago that regular consumption could possibly protect against diabetes.
